Art work by George Winter . Pottawattamie Indians (written in blue watercolor and blue ink , block capitals , lower center ; 2.2 cm . below lower edge of composition) . Inscribed , upper right : "#64 " (in red ink).Six men (one astride horse) and three women , standing , seated on ground or on tree trunk , in forest clearing . Men's attire includes turbans , ruffled and plain shirts (one belted) , sash with fringed tail , blankets , winged leggings , moccasins ; one with long queue tied with ribbon bow ; two men smoking short stemmed pipes . Women wearing blouses (one fitted) with trimmed capelike collars , multi-strand necklaces , hourglass-shaped hair bow . Horse has bridle with forehead ring and fringe , fringed breast collar , saddle with stirrups , decorated blanket , cropped tail . Circa 1860s-1870s .
