Description Continued	THE OLD OAKEN BUCKET from "Hell for Leather" A History of Football at Purdue 1887*1951 As sporting events have come down through the years, great rivalries have evolved between different teams end players, and collegiate football is no exception to this rule. Harvard takes on traditional rival Yale, Army and Navy games draw thousands yearly, and in the far North, Michigan and Minnesota battle it out for the "Little Brown Jug" But nowhere in the country can any two teams equal the Hoosier-land classic which pits Purdue against Indiana for possession of the "Old Oaken Bucket." The series began back in 1891 some thirty years before the Bucket was to make an appearance, and it was this contest that gave the Hoosiers a 60-0 initiation at the hands of the Boilermakers, Purdue dominated the early series and it was not until 1899 that Indiana tasted victory, but since then many a "Grandstand Quarterback" has sent his dope sheet flying to the wind after the clock had ticked out the last minutes of play; for anything can happen, and usually does. The Bucket was first presented to the presidents of the respective schools in ceremonies before the 1925 game by George Ade, distinguished humorist, representing Purdue; and Harry Kurrie, then president of the M-Railroad, representing Indiana. This first game ended in a tie, there an "IP" link was added to the trophy and each school kept the bucket for six months. Since then, the initial of the winning school, with engraved on it, has been added to make a link-chain, and the victor gains possession of the bucket for the next year.(more)
