Dear BiochemIkers: November, 1986 With the completion of the Agriculture Research Building and Life Science Research Building, four of our faculty have moved from our antiquated facilities Into state-of-the-art labs. Jack Dixon and Kl-Han Kin moved to the LSRB building, David Kufcn and tarry Butler have moved Into new labs in the ARB building, Butlerffs move coincides with a complete shift of research to plant biochemistry from enzyme mechanisms, Larry Butler's lab is a coming "together of countries. In recent months he has had Dr, Wilma Pace, a visiting scholar from Rome; Dr, Hamid Eihad, postdoc from Sudan; Vijaya Reddy, graduate student from India; Manual Zamudlo, undergrad from Mexico; Carlos Morel 1, undergrad from Puerto Rico; Cai Tishu, visiting scholar from the People's Republic of China and Dr, Simon Mole, postdoc from Scotland, It is unusual to have such a breadth of countries represented in a group. The Purdue University Biochemistry Program (PUB) has also moved Into new offices In LSRB, Jack Dixon had the honor of being named Harvey W, Wiley Distinguished Professor of Bio¬ chemistry, Dr, Wiley was State Chemist and Professor of Biochemistry in the Department from I88I-I883, Dr« Olxon was also presented the Outstanding Research Award In Diabetes Research 1985-1986, from the American Diabetes Association - Indiana Affiliate, Karl Branit has been named Director of Resident Instruction of the School of Agriculture and is currently Acting Dean, Klaus Hermann is serving a three-year term as Assistant Dean of the Graduate School, Gunter Kohl haw was Outstanding Counselor In Biochemistry, The Purdue-MARC Program directed by Victor Rodwell received a $5,000 Presidential Affirmative Action Award in 1986. Ron Sonervliie has been appointed chairperson for the Biomedical Sciences Study Section, NIH. Claudia Kent Is a member of the Physiological Chemistry Study Section, NIH. Dan Carlson Is off to beautiful sunny California to be Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at University of Cali¬ fornia, Davis. However, the parties at the ASBC meetings will still be held in Don's hotel room. Herb Parker retired in October, 1985 and Is enjoying the "leisurely" life of farming. Dr, Seymour Benzer, James Griffen Boswell Professor of Neurosclence, California Institute of Technology presented the first Bernard Axel rod Lecture on "Genes, Neurons and Behavior in Drosophlla, The second Bernard Axelrod Lectures presented by Dr, Howard Schahaman, University of California, Berkeley were on "From Allostery to Site-directed Mutagenesis - 20 Years with Aspartage Transcarbam- ylase", I, Structure, Assembly and Conformation Changes and 2, Interallelic Complementation in Relation to Protein Structure and the Formation of Active Enzyme from Defective Mutants, The International Center for Applied Research in Carbohydrate Chemistry has been established at Purdue, The Roy L, Whistler Chair for Carbohydrate Teaching and Research is a part of the Center, There is a cloud of dust near Hovde Hall, The fountain can no longer be seen from North¬ western Avenue, The Electrical and Materials Engineering Building will span the northeast entrance to the Purdue Mail and will connect to the Electrical Engineering and Physics buildings by walkways, A new Geosclences and Civil Engineering Building and addition to the Civil Engineering Building have beguru The Unlversltyfs first permanent Visitor's Center is now housed in the Northwestern Avenue Parking Garage, We were saddened to learn Mike Rogers (Ph,D, 1972) had a heart attack approximately Memorial Day, He Is comatose and probably wl II be moved to a nursing facility soon.
