We hope our readers will enjoy news about these persons. —Ed. John W. Northrup, son of Mr. Roy L. Northrup, 608 N. Kenmore Drive, Los Angeles, California, is a member of Navy V-12 at Purdue University, and is due to leave February 26. His father is with Mc- Kesson-Robbins. He is a member of Chi Iota Phi pharmaceutical fraternity and Phi Sigma Epsilon social fraternity, and is engaged to Miss Laurel Warren, of Kansas City, Missouri. Prior to entering Purdue, he attended the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Lowell Wayne "Pugsy" Mead, elected as the boy most likely to succeed by his hometown (Goodland) folks, has favored the Pharmacy School with his presence since 1941. He is a member of the A.Ph.A., a pledge of Alpha Kappa Lambda, and, in addition, has one of the outstanding bands on the campus. This "Gaydog" of the Pharmacy School is gaining a wide reputation throughout the state—with and without his band (how is Mary?) Mead is destined to go higher and higher ( in the musical world). STUDENT ISSUE Roy Fredrick Knowlton hails from up "Bahston" (Mass.) way — a suburb of Ashland, Mass. Knowlton is better known as "Duke", the discoverer of the 93 rd element, "Dukidium", accidentally discovered by him in qualitative analysis lab last summer in "a queer colloidal terpene precipitate resulting from the addition of photovatisulfate to an unknown solution." The "Duke" arrived on campus with his translator in August of 1942. His translator, unable to stand Lafayette weather (he couldn't swim), went home in a "box". However, "Duke" patched up a leaky boat he bought from one of the town fishermen, and with the help of the students, sign language ,and several recognizable mutter- ings, has gotten along very well. "Duke" is Rush Chairman of Alpha Kappa Lambda and is a member of the A.Ph.A. His ability as a military strategist won him an appointment as advisor to the Commandant. Around the Armory he is known as "General Wainwright" and "The Mad Russian." Knowlton is confused by caution labels, but still insists he is right by putting "Not To Be Swallowed" labels on boxes of suppositories. All in all, though, the Pharmacy School wouldn't be the same without the honorable Dr. Roy Frederick Knowlton. Joanne Deffendall is better known to her classmates as "DefH". The rumor has it that this Delta Gamma has a liking for cats, so if one of you boys happen to know of some poor stray kitten, it's always good for a conversation. However, Deffi's hobby is knitting; while she is fond of basketball, too. Oh, by the way, Deffi is a transfer from Science school—we're glad to have you in ye old school.
