Eckles: Hovde: l 306 This is an interview between President Emeritus Frederick L. Hovde and Professor R. B. Eckles, for the Purdue University Archives on August 31, 1972. President Hovde, we've touched pretty much on your activities at Purdue and your career what about your activities while President outside of the university? Well, in coming to the university in 1946, I'd resolved in my own mind that I would limit my external activities to a few things in believing that the task at hand here at Purdue University would be a be one that would really by its very nature demand even more then the time alloted to each man each day namely the 24 hours. I had one publi~ service interest which was generated by my war time service namely Defense Research and second I had made up my mind that I would be active in the Land Grant Association. The conservationships with the Federal government and part of the Land Grant Institutions was part of a long and successful progress and one that the Land Grant Association as an organization developed confidence and experience and expertsee more so than any other of the associations of higher educational institutions. The armed forces, of cour~e, were finalli convinced as World War II came to an end that strength of the armed forces and their weapon systems was something that the armed forces and the Defense Department itself should manage and
