~~ - 8 - Interview with R. B. Stewart Monday, March 28, 1977 Dr. S. No, Beese did not build the place. When we moved out to what is Westwood, we bought the tract from the McCormick family. Tnis, of course, is tne record as in the deeds. I think we were the fourth owners of that place since it came from the United States Government. Mrs. F. You bought forty acres. ,~ Dr. S. Forty acres and a fraction, and I finally rounded ~ out--at one time I had 52 or 53 acres out there. The part adja - cent and directly east of Beese's house I gave to the church or I gave to something, and then the Foundation bought it from tnose people; in that way I dispersed the gifts and yet made sure the University got the land. The people south of Westwood when we moved were named Miller, and they used to run a dairy there, I think it was, and they built this big house, and that big house has the attic which was all finished off and they used to give big parties there in the old days. When it got too much for them, they had a son and a daughter, and the daughter was in foods and she ran the food section at Lincoln Lodge on the North River Road, and her nusband, named Howey, is now here. She died and he has remarried and lives down here, and we were at dinner with them not long ago. Well, when they were out at Lincoln Lodge, they had next door, so they built a little house for their parents, and the Millers wanted to move out there and wanted to sell their property. And at that time we had gotten Beese to come out, and he and Potter and I together had worked hard to convince Beese to
