Krannert Krannert Graduate School of Management Summer 1977 Purdue University Krannert School Hosts TRW Space Systems Executive In March, the Krannert Graduate School hosted a unique type of space pioneer. Not an astronaut, but an executive whose career is devoted to the development of technology and systems needed to extend man's domain into space. His name is George Harter, vice president and assistant general man¬ ager of the Defense and Space Systems Group, TRW, Inc. Harter spent two hectic weeks at Purdue. His schedule included visits to eight classes in the School of Manage¬ ment, informal sessions with a variety of students, and the delivery of two seminars, one for undergraduates and one for graduate students. The undergraduate seminar, "im¬ pact of Computers on Business Man¬ agement," dealt with the growth of computer management systems, and particularlythequestion of operational costs versus efficiency gained in con¬ temporary systems. Harter also cov¬ ered the evolution of miniprocessors to their ever-growing importance in more sophisticated systems. In the seminar designed for graduate students, "Government Incentive Contracting," Harter discussed the unique problems corporations en¬ counter working for the government. Harter, who received his bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from Purdue, is vice president of the Armed Forces Com¬ munications and Electronics Associa¬ tion and a board member of the Govern¬ ment Products Division of the Electron¬ ic Industries Association. In addition to his position with TRW Inc., Harter is president of Colorado Electronics, Inc., Colorado Springs, and board chairman and chief execu¬ tive officer for Aertech Industries, Sunnyvale, California. Dean John S. Day, (right) welcomed George Harter, vice president and assistant general manager of the Defense and Space Systems Group, TRW Inc., to the Krannert Graduate School as the second executive in residence. Alumni Directors Evaluate Regional Conference Plan The Krannert Alumni Foundation Board of Directors met in Chicago on April 19 to evaluate plans for regional alumni conferences in Chicago and San Francisco in 1977. Roman Tuason, director of executive and management programs for the Krannert Graduate School of Manage¬ ment, reported to the board about re¬ cent meetings with alumni steering committees in Chicago and San Francisco. Glenn Mitchell was also in attendance representing the Chicago committee. Professor Tuason reported that re¬ sults of the steering committee meetings indicated that there was significant alumni interest in each city for a seminar or conference however there were questions con¬ cerning the type of alumni activity to plan. The board members directed the steering committees to investigate activities such as alumni luncheons with a keynote speaker as well as the one-day conference plan. In otherbusiness, the board of direc¬ tors discussed ways to use Krannert Alumni Foundation funds to assist students. Three possible projects will be investigated: 1) recognition plaques for Krannert Scholars; 2) funding of an annual one-day inten¬ sive seminar for Krannert students, planned and organized by students; 3) funding assistance for recruitment activities. . , continued on page 11
