G, STEVENSON, AI THE Montgomery County Fair, September 16th, 1858. I shall not attempt to instruct you to-day upon the different modes of agriculture, or upon any particular mode. These questions are being constantly- discussed by the agricultural press, and any thing that I could say would be but repeating what is uttered every day. For the purpose of answering in some sort the object of our invitation her& to-day, we will, in the first place, invite you to consider the necessity of labor. The earth is given to man as a plaee of abode, and the first great necessity that presses itself is to provide food and protection against the vicissitudes of the climate. There is no natural provision made anywhere for man's subsistance without labor. In the most favored climate it is necessary for man to gather the fruit that constitutes his food. And no where is he secure without somo sort of sheltor or dwelling as a means of protection. Kaiment is also indispensable and must be provided. Food, and raiment, and shelter arc essentials, making imperious demands that must be supplied.
