The "Farmer" a Teacher. Editors Indiana Farmer: It is by tho support of the farmers that your paper is kept goiiijj. It Is ono of our many teachers; while every article or item is supposed to be for our benefit, 1 think that (some space is Bome times lilled by contributors who mif;ht havo written on subjects of importance, rather than on some trlval subject that merely lills space. Kor instance, friend J. M. .Stahl, reprimands us poor noody, ignorant farmers for mending up old tools. Xow friend Stahl might havo explained to us how tho lato McKinley lcvision of tho tarilT, on tin sheets (for one item) benefits us farmers. The tarifl issue is of vast importance to tho farmer, one wo should understand, therefore when great men write for a great Farmer paper I wish thoy would write more on great subjects, and not tako so much space merely to fill with printers ink, wo want valuo rocoivod. J. A. FlDLKR, Tippecanoo Co. —We think you are too haul on Mr. Stahl. As we understood him, ho simply objected to spending timo on trying to patch up that which would bo worth nothing when mended; would be constantly requiring further repairs, and liable all tho time to causo dangerous accidents.—Eds. Address FARMER, Box ay, Frank- Editors Indiana Farmer: Answer to II. A. Stewart's sheep problem: One acre of pasture land pastures five head of sheep, then one sheep eats one-lif th acre of grass; one acre of plowed land pastures eight sheep, then one sheep eats one eighth acre of grass. To find the average amount that one sheep eats you will add one-fifth and one-eighth acres of grass, which equals thirteen-fortieths acre which is what two sheep eat. To find the average amount one sheep eats take one- half of thirteen-fortieths which isthirteen- eightieths acre, the average amount of pasture land and plowed land over which one sheep pastures. Therefore one aero pastures as many sheep as thirteen-eight- ieths is contained in eighty-eightieths which is six and two-thirteenth sheep to the acre. Then multiply '{25 acres by six and two-thirteenths, the result is 2,000 sheep. I*. Hutchinson. Thorntown. Editors Indiana Farmer: If one acre is allowed for five sheep one- fifth of an acre would pasture one sheep. If one aero of plowed land pastures eight sheep, one-eighth of an acre would pasture one sheep one-eighth by one-fifth by one- eighth equals eight-fortieths. One fifth equals five-fortieths plus eight-fortieths equals thirteen-fortieths, equal to 325 acres. One-fortieth equals as much as 13 is contained times in 325 acres, which is 25 acres. Forty-forieths or all of them equals -10 times 25 which Is 1,000 sheep. Sullivan Co. II. Thompson. Samuel Thomson, Gibson Co., O. Jl. Davies, Parke Co., get the same result also. Sowing: Oats. Editors Indiana Farmer: I believe most farmers sow their oats too thin. I worked for one of the most successful farmers in my young days. He said most farmers make a mistake saving seed oats, that 2J. bushels was the right amount. I don't think I sowed enough until last season. It was windy and I put on all of three bushels to the acre, and learned, too late in my life, to find out it was the right amount. There was scarcely a ragweed in it while my Orchard Grass Once More. Editors Indiana Farmer: As I opened the debate on tho orchard grass question, I presume you will allow me tho privilege of closing. Jlr. Walters, Oldham county Ky., says that it has been grown in that State for :!0 years. While I am not a native of that State, I was ushered into existence on the compromise line of ,'Ki° 30', in sight of the Falls City, and have known the grass for a longer period than ho gives. Old Jlr. Hoskins, father of Itobt. II., now of the seed and agricultural house, Main street, Louisville, Ky., sowed 17 acres on Dr. Ewing's farm above .leflersonville, in lNJ-'J. Gabl. May and Chas. Collier, both of Trimble county Ky., sowed apiece in Hartholomewcounty, ■10 years ago. That sown by Collier (iu his yard) still remains a compact sod. Jas. Jl. Ganon, late of Paris, Jennings county, remembers a piece sown on his father's farm 50 years ago. I adviso heavy seeding, two bushels per acre, as you cannot expect it to raise itself. If cut when the bloom has dropped, you save all the seed and have a fair quality of hay, providing you do not allow it to bleach out in the field. Tho process of scattering the hay for seeding is too slow, when seed can be purchased for $1 per bushel. Jlr. W's. process of saving the seod is correct. Jly favorite time to sow is in February or JIarch, but this year I sowed on a snow in January, to get an oven catch; only sow two steps. I prefer snow when I sow as I can soo what I am doing. Heavy seeding prevents tussocks. I have had fair success in sowing iu the following months: October, January, February, JIarch, April and Jlay; but bad with that sown in September, as it was lifted from the ground in the spring and partially perished. Unlike Jlr. Nelson I have never rolled after sowing, but presume it would be beneficial. I want to say to Jlr. W., that I never cut but one crop, that was the second crop in 1S78, in Bartholomew county, eight acres. I threshed with a vibrator 61 bushels and sold the straw from the mow at $8 per ton. I cut on an average, with grass hook and cradle, yearly, from fence corners and waste places, is bushels, which keeps me in seed for sowing. V. Jl. (.;. Decatur Co.
