We must decline hereafter to reply to queries by mall, lt was not our Inteutlon to open a free legal bureau, as many seem to think, for the beuellt of private individuals, although subscribers. All we can consistently do Is to give opinions on cases of a general character, such as are likely to occur to clt- liens lu any part of the State at anytime, and tlie answers to which will be generally useful. These questions Bhould be stated aa clearly and brleny aa possible. If a farm is deeded to a husband anil wife jointly, ran it be takon for debts of the husband, other than those made for the ln'iittU of the farm? M. Franklin Co. No. Can a perton holding a isommtsalon, and acting as poHtiiuuiter, legally hold aiHiiii- inlM-ion and perform the duties of Notary Public? I.. II. O. Glezen. No. A man buys a farm and renta it to a man to run as a dairy farm, furnishing half and getting half. Who fays for Timothy feed aud clover Beed to sow on fields, to be used as pasture for the cows? A SUIiSCl'lllKR. ICach party pays half. A man dying in 1850, his widow soils oil the property and pays tho debts and finishes paying for the land. Can she make a warranty deed to one of her children, of her part of tho land? Oraoge Oo. - - A Si BST-ITiBEU. Yes. What is the law in regard to line fences? An estate has been settled but the partition fences have not been placed. If I farm my side and do not pastuto it, can I lie compelled to put up half of the fence? La Porto Co. X. Yes. Does the law of llhode Island require a person to own ?l:M worth of real estate in order to become a voter, as stated in a book in my possesion? K. II. Randolph Co. The law has been changed and does not require a property qualification. A and 1! join land. A has a mill dam the water cut around a dim on H'u land. The County Commissioners built a levee between A and 15, leaving a great pond of water on B's land. 1. Had the Commissioners a right to build a levee to the damage of B's land? 2. Had the Commissioners a right to remove culvert and make a solid embankment, this being a public highway? .'. Has I! tbe right to run a tile in said pond and take tho water out? This pond extends into a mill dam. U. T. 1. Yes.—B may however secure dain- uges. 2. Yes. :,. No. A and B own ndj-.init g farms. Thodi- vidiiig fence elands just whoro it was built :>0 years fgo. A is dii-satisfied and wants anew survey. Must B pay half for survey iiif>? •_. If the fence built by both comes on ollber side of the lino can that one hold the fence? .!. If thero should bo two fences built can one compel tho other to give half of a driveway between? 1". It. B. Napoloon. 1. Yes. Whoro survoy is made according to the Statute. 2. No. Tho fence belongs to both, equally. 3. Each man must build his fence on his own ground, but he may build it just as ckse to the line as he can got it. Neither is compelled to give ground for a drivo way. Raising Tobacco. Editors Indiana Fanner: It is time small farmers were doing something. What can wo raise with tho mest profit. It is generally known that wheat, corn and oats do not pay as a rule. I think small farmers could raise tobacco with proper culture and care, with good profit. Before the late war the small farmers did grow some to sell, before the revenue was put on. It has been removed so the small farmer can now sell it in the market, in small or large amounts. I do not use the weed, but it will bo in use as long as time lasts, so I think it will be well for some one to write en the subject in regard to cultivation, etc. Clay Co. W. II. Tiffbv. 1. Can a married man sell bis farm, without the consent and signature of his wife? 2. Could deed be made in such a way as to make it unnecessary for wife's signature? 15. N. T. 1. No. 2. Only by taking deed in the name of some third person. Can a husband, after thedeathof his wife and her parents, hold his wife's full share of her father's property, or any part of it? The husband being childless. Miami Co. Frank Query. If the wife's parents died first, then at the wife's death her portion would go to her husband. If the wife died first and after her death her father died, then the husband takes nothing. Will the bill passed by the Senate requiring the cleaning of ditches and drains between Aug. 1st and Nov. 1st of each year include creeks and all streams excepting rivers? If not it ought to. Drift ought to be kept out of all water courses. Grant. J. B. C. No, only open ditches are to be cleared out, under this bill, but you are right in saying that natural drainways Bhould be kept clear also. On March 11, lsso, a law was passed in this State, prohibiting the drawing of over 2,000 pounds on a narrow tired wagon, or 2,500 on a broad tired wagon, whilo the gravel roads were in thawing or soft condition. Now, suppose a superintendent accuses a person of hauling too heavy a load. Tho accused goes to magistrates office, examines affidavit and finds that tbe accuser only guessed at his load. Now, can he not demand that tho accuser's statement be proven? W\ C. Huntington Co. The accuser must prove the charge by sworn testimony; and if he falls to do so, the defendant should be discharged. An Independent Order. Editors Indiana Farmer: I see the Indianapolis Sentinel charges the Farmers' Alliance with being an organization in the interest of the Republican party. Now this is entirely erroneous, the Alliance was not organiz-*! in the interest of any party. But, if anything, the Democratic party is more in full accord with our platform than another. Our representatives wero pledged to support the claims of tho farmers, aDd . if they fail to do so, we want to know it. The people with a unanimous voice demanded a sub- stanial reduction in official fees and salaries: and what have our legislators done? As for the Representative from Boone county, his answer is on file in our County Alliance, in company with the answer of our Congressman. We aro organiz-xl for business. A. M. S. Boone Co. Like a Good Dinner to a Hungry Man. Editors Indiana Farmer: My subscription expires next week. Please be prompt in sending it right along as I do not want to miss a number. Of the ten or a dozen papors that I take, the Farmer is always read first. I would just as soon think about doing without ono of my moals each day as to do without the Fab.mkr. Wheat looks a little brown but is not hurt yet. Corn is 50 cents per bushel; lings $.1 and about all gone; seems s though farmers want everything else but hogs now, but I think now is the time to stock up. I am going to raise every pig I possibly can this spring. Vigo Co. K. C. —Thank you for tho good opinion of the Farmer, so frankly expressed. You are undoubtedly correct in believing that hogs are goiDg to pay better next fall.—Eds.
