Dear Lasselle:
We often loose the golden opportunity
that commands us, for securing information that at a
late period we fully realize.
In revising my Pottawattamie [Potawatomi] sketches, and coming
over my old journals and memorandum that I made
in 1837, and of some recent dates, I find continuous that
I am greatly in need of some Indian name that would
be of interest to preserve in connection with those Indian
characters that I possess. Your father’s connection with the
Indian trade and your family associations with the
early settlements of the Wabash, and the interest that
your brother Jacques, always evinces, as well as
yourself give me some assurance that you can aid
me in supplying my present need in making a
record of the history of some of the man of the forest,
that I have felt so much interest in.
I feel a desire to obtain the derivation of the word
“Wabash”. It was spelt by the French “Oua-bash.” I have
often enquired of early settlers for this meaning of the word
