2ne N.B. I commenced on the wrong side of my sheet. I have had to use
your fills and have proved their efficacy. They stopped my running out this time.
San Francisco Sept. 20th 1864
I am in receipt of two letters from you hitherto unnoticed
dated June and July although I have written intermediately one to you.
I had intended to notice your last somewhat earlier than this but a
crowd of circumstances have prevented – and have also detained me here
very much in opposition to my wishes and design. But so it is proving
how much we are “the creatures of circumstance” The first preventive I
experienced from entering when my allotted peregrinations from home
was Robert’s failure in his enterprise. My assistance became needful
to him and partner, in the exhibition, to the tune of several hundred dollars
and after running through with that I have had to assist “Bob” in getting
into to business involving an outlay on their [assets?] to six hundred and fifty
dollars. For three hundred and fifty of the amount I have received diamond
pins & rings, and the balance a note from Bob: but this money, thus used,
consumed all that I had appropriated for travelling purposes and keeps
me for a while from moving off to any place. Rings and pins are
things also of little use to me but I clearly saw that I had to take them or
nothing as neither have means wherewith to pay. Thus you perceived one trouble.
Many others of minor importance, involving lesser, sums have occurred
but I a more serious one before me and which hangs in greater
magnitude of amount, i e, between three & four thousand dollars in gold.
A person to whom I loaned 3500 has failed – he is compromising or trying with his creditors
to compound with them at 33. I know due them is [ ] to about 200
making 3700. Now I have all the contingency of bankruptcy & honesty
of the person [ ] his circumstances to look for my money & nothing
more. In the schedule presented to his creditors my amt is placed there
as “a debt of honor” but methinks ‘twill be of little benefit to me in result.
Time will & can alone tell; and I am a fixture become in order to
watch the issue. Misfortune seemingly is again upon me and
I cannot tell to what extent as this war is beginning to tell heavily
upon every interest in business. disconnected with Govt. patronage

Description | Handwritten letter From: Charles Winter, San Francisco, Sept. 20, 1864 To: George Winter ALS, 4 p. (1 sheet, folded) |
Description Continued | Acknowledging G.W.'s letters of June and July. His plans to travel have been postponed by his having to lend Robert a large sum of money. Another person, to whom Charles had loaned $3500, has declared bankruptcy, and he will have to guarantee that amount as well. Business has suffered greatly because of the war, and the only hope is a change of administration. He hears little from Cincinnati, perhaps because of some misunderstandings that arose during his last visit there. Complaints about the lack of courtesy and proper feeling within the family. He hopes to bring the remains of his late wife back to Spring Grove to be buried there. Description of the monument he has commissioned. Saw George (Jr.) ten days ago; he is working as a (house) painter, but plans to return to mining in Mexico, although Charles feels he will not succeed. Concerned about his own financial situation and the ingratitude of those he has helped. |
