Logansport Cass Co
India Octer 18th 1849
Rev & Dear Sir:
Since the completion of the paintings, I have had
no opportunity of forwarding them to you, until the present
moment. You will receive them from the had of Mr D. B. Carlson
a friend and citizen of Logansport, whom I have authorized to
secure the amt. due and [red.?] the bill. You will find the title of
each painting in the back of the canvass. I have sent another paining
price $15, being a reverse view of “Chepaltupec” which you may buy or not
-as you please. I hope that you will be pleased with these effects of
my pencil. If they do not possess the force and [glune? ] of colour which
popular taste might appear, still I hope that they my impress
you with the idea that they have the “authority of nature” on their
side; for my endeavour has been to make them the
interpretation of natural effects.
The “”view upon the Wabash” with a group of Pottawattomi [Potawatomi]
Indians, represents a scene not far from Logansport. It embraces
on the opposite side of the river a portion of the “National Reserve”,
originally belonging to the Miami Tribe, who within a few years
have conceded these fertile lands to the U.S. Government, as you are
aware. But a few indian families are now to be found in this
vast body of land. Some few “reservations” yet belong the particular
indians, who are permitted still to occupy them. The reserve
is now thickly settled with squatters – and the forest is fast yielding
to the hum of industry. The Pottawattamies [Potawatomi] were occupants of
the land north of the Wabash. The last emigration of this tribe took
