Evansville Ind March 12 ’49
Dear Winter,
Your long and nay acceptable letter
of 5th mth reached me 14th. and has been quite too
long unanswered. I might tell you of the primary
motives of my business, at this dawn of the year,
of the many calls upon my leisure hours, and add
a few days spent in patronizing the doctor
for the good of my body, and call the whole
an apology. But I shall do no such thing.
I ought to have written you sooner, and will do
it now, without a preamble, that will occupy
space to no good purpose.
Let my miniature etc. be completed in your own
good time, and I shall be best satisfied.
I shall not think you have forgotten them
nor will the delay be any tax upon what you
are pleased to term “My generous disposition
towards you personally” If my friendly
feelings would be impaired by so slight a
cause they are of but little value.
I am glad to hear of the new direction you
have given to your pencil, and believe you may
do well to pursue it. That Battle piece and
many others which you can produce would be
a source of profit, disposed of in the way
you name in more places Logan, and

Winter, George, 1810-1876 |
Description | Handwritten letter From: W. Hubbell, Evansville, March 12, 1849 To: George Winter ALS, 4 p. (one sheet, folded) |
Description Continued | Acknowledging G.W. letter of February 5. He does not object to a delay in the completion of a miniature G.W. is painting for him. Encourages the "new direction" G.W. plans to take with his painting, of which the "Battle piece" is an example; he thinks it will be lucrative. Encourages him to cater to the public taste rather than worry about artistic purity, which will never make him a living. Implies that G.W. is planning to tailor his Indian paintings to conform more to the public's desire for the wild and exotic. The facts that G.W. has collected will someday be appreciated. G.W.'s report of Logansport, as full of strangers, unlike the old days, interests him, and he would rather preserve the old memories than see the present reality. The state has been miserly in paying G.W. for a painting of the Battle Ground, but it will enhance his reputation. |
