Monday Morning
Geo Winter Esq
Logansport
My Dear Friend
It
gives me pleasure to acknowledge your very
agreeable letter of last month and therefore I
commence the laboures [labors] of the week, as you perceive
with the agreeable task of answering it.
You must know that a long time
ago, just previous to Fathers return from the South
I had indited a most stupendous epistle, (filling
an entire sheet of fools-cap) for your especial
benefit and behoof [behoove]– but as fate would have it
the precious document became mislaid and
turned up only the other day, from a crevice in my
bureau. I thought of mailing it – but tho the
contents appeared rather too ancient to be interesting
and the “dust of ages” had accumulated to such
an extent upon the paper, I feared you would
consider it some antediluvian manuscript rather
than a bona fide, modern communication.
You letter came to had a few
days after father left for Logansport, thus preventing
me from forwarding “The Captive” as you desired.
I regret the circumstances very much, as I
knew of no other opportunity likely to offer soon for
forwarding it unless by mail, which would be both
uncertain and expensive.
There is to be a grand
Whig gathering at Indianapolis on the 13th inst and
