Fort Wayne June 12. 1848
My Dear Brother
You long letter was received in due
season; read with mingled feelings of (shall I say Pride &
pleasure, your reminiscences of the past are too painful to
think upon with pleasure & yet I am glad to know your
feelings, but my dear Sir you judge me rather harshly
when you thought or think me destitute of that kindly
toward my sister or her children, when you thought
you could not address me in that trying tone you speak of
and none but God knows how I felt when I received her
letter after her illness. I am sorry you have dwelt so much
upon the past, for I think to be happy we must banish
the past & think of the present & future, if however you
are willing to forget I am sure I am.
It is a source of much regret that I cannot go to your
home, but as I have made so much longer stay here than
I anticipated that I must hasten back to Dayton & I
feel anxious about my children. I never have been so
