On the Tippecanoe Battle Ground –
Nov. 7th 1873
It is to day – sixty two years since upon this consecrated
ground – by the blood – valor – and heroism of Harrison’s army the [illegible]
battle was achieved – on this day sixty-two years since
this now peaceful grove – was a scene of carnage –
The fresh graves of those who there fell – were but slightly and hastily covering
by the earth and leaves The wounded men yet in the agonies of the
suffering – [illegible] and care = Some of the [illegible]
that – stired them – in the battle now shivered [illegible] [illegible][illegible]
but many have disappeared – by time – the storm
and the axe. This [illegible] of today to the
Battle Ground is of [illegible][illegible]. This peaceful
grove – returns yet some of the brown and yellow
foliage – and on surveying –this now [illegible]
enclosed ground – and the surroundings – with the
marks of cultivation and change – suggests but
in a faint [illegible] – the wild and uncultivated
scene of 62 years ago –
The battle ground as presented to the State in
Nov. 7th 1836 – by Genl John Tipton the donor originally [illegible]
16-55/000 acres. Nearly the whole of this gift of land is
now enclosed – leaving an avenue of sixty feet on
the north line – near the Methodist Institute.
This brings the left flank where [illegible] [illegible] [illegible]
were [illegible] when the army was encamped.

Description | "On the Tippecanoe Battleground. Nov. 7th 1873" AMs, 2p. (written in pencil) Sixty-two years ago, the battle was fought; today's scene, with cultivated fields, enclosed battle site, and many of the old oaks gone, only vaguely recalls the events of that time. A group of Tippecanoe County residents has visited the battle-ground today to honor this anniversary. General Tipton presented the site to the state of Indiana on Nov. 7, 1836; nearly all of that area is now enclosed by a fence, except for an area adjacent to the Methodist Institute, where Major Wells' forces stood. This now peaceful ground was the scene of great carnage 62 years ago. The dead were hastily buried in a shallow grave covered with leaves. |
