Mr. Winters,
Dr. Sir
yours of the 9 Nov.
came to hand a few dayes[days] since on the a count
of my not going to Peru, I am in the dark
as well as your self why the portrait has not
been received I was at your place two yeares[years]
a go last August a merchant thare[there] I disremember
his name and my self went to your office to see
the like ness it was not to be found you a was
a way from home to Ohio I think I was anctious[anxious]
to see it for Aunt P- had not seen at that time
on reaching Peru I gathered [gathered] what information [information]
I could of Mr S.T. Miller why the likeness had not
been got he sayed [said] that Mr Ewing thought you
asked an extravagant price for it and ment to get
it cheaper either from you or get another person
to draw it he did not blame my Uncle I dont know
whether to credit this or not from Mr. M. as to your
price I know nothing a bout I have written
to Uncle for the particulars and have received
no answer yet in answer to this. They wish you to
state your lowest cash price if reasonable they will
buy it I trust I may know more about this after hearing from my Uncle

Description Continued | Two years previously, Slocum had visited G.W.'s studio to see the portrait, but could not as G.W. was away in Ohio at that time. Mr. Miller had informed Slocum that Ewing had refused to pay the "extravagant price" G.W. had asked for it. Slocum requests that G.W. state his lowest price for the work, which he will pay if it is reasonable. Notation on address side: received Jan. 6, 1847; responded Jan. 13, 1847. |
