Tippecanoe Battle Ground &
Prophet’s Town
Visited the Tippecanoe Battle Ground
and Prophet’s Town – July 24th 1869.
The changes in the physical character –
estics – of the county – since my first
visit – to these classic spots in the year
1840 –
Hirah [Hiram] Shaw – house on the
border of the swampy prairie – Timber
cleared – The road leading to Prophet’s Town
solid and firm – The path directly through
the swampy prairie – from the Battle Ground
to Shaw’s house – solid – and gravely – in 1840
impassible – The path from the ground
commences near the spot where the
trees stood where Col Daviess fell
in the battle – The trees – were chopped
down where the Rail Road was made.
My sketch of those trees – presented.
No fence now surrounds the
reserved portion of the Battle Ground.
In 1840 – there was a post and rail
fence – with two large gateways – at
either end of the enclosure – The secure
enclosure has since disappeared – it
was partly destroyed by fire – occasioned
by the fire wafted by the passing
Engine of a train.
The state owes an obligation to the
late Donor of the ground Genl John Tipton
to make a permanent fence – by which
the trees – and ground might be well
preserved –

Description | "Mem. relating to visit to Tippecanoe B.G. and To Prophet's Town-after an absence of 29 years" (title from verso) AMs, 1 p. (written on back of preprinted insurance form) A visit to the Battle Ground on July 24, 1869 reveals many changes since his first visit in 1840. Timber has been cleared, solid roads built to Prophet's Town and across the swampy prairie; the trees where Daviess fell (sketched by George Winter) were cut down for the railroad line; Hiram Shaw's house has been built. In 1840, a fence with two gateways surrounded the battle-ground; it is now gone, although the state is obligated, under the terms of John Tipton's donation of the site, to build a permanent fence. Notes along margin (possibly from published volume?) regarding numbers of forces and casualties in the Battle. |
