Logansport Cass Cy
Indiana Jany 30th 1839
Dear Colonel:
It was with no ordinary pleasure
believe me that I received your kind letter of 22nd inst.
which has this moment come to hand and which
commands my immediate attention. It is with deep
regret I find that bad health has been a preventive
to you visiting this place. I have often wished
that I could have the opportunity afforded me of taking of taking another sitting of you
and (which I am confident you would have
granted me) to completing a likeness of you in accordance with my own taste
which I wish [crossed out/[illegible] greatly need, and even do have]
to help carry out a design which I have in [view?]
and thorough the accomplishment of which may not
be expected now or even in the West. yet regarding
it as future object, is of high consideration to me.
It is true I have a likeness of you besides the miniature sketch
[crossed out/ it is not a portrait; it is the scene] which I
painted in the Indian Camp amidst those
scenes of novelty, beauty, and great interest which
presented themselves at lake Kee-waw-nay [Keewawnay]
- Never shall I forget Kee-way-nay [Keewawnay] village
