[Copy letter to Sands]
Dr. C.
Your kind favor acknowledging the recd. of the sketch and with a tender of your hospitality
came to hand 22nd inst., your promise to render to me a service.
Your friends in the Indian Department if within your
power – were cause to awaken gratitude in the bosom of
an being who can appreciate the value good intentions
-and I feel deeply these efforts of yours for I do
feel conscious of having claims to merit so much
disinterestedness on your part. Your remembrances I
have given to your friends – as you desired me.
I saw Dr. Jerrolamen and C. Vigus yesterday. They were pleased to hear of
you. The Dr. is rather indisposed and though sickly
he was induced to enter the arena of dispute with
John Wright – Prosecuting Attorney here who has lost so
far sight of the dignity of the State and his own [illegible]
as an official as to haul up and circumstance that
is possible to be construed as inditeable offense thereby brought
upon himself the [approb**] Epithet of [illegible] Informer.
The following are the circumstances connected with the affair:
The Dr. when he returned from the Emigration
brought some coffee from [illegible] on “spec” – he gave it to
McCleery & [illegible] for sale – Wm. Wright brother of the
prosecutor bought a bad of said coffee of that firm – Jerrolamen
mentioned the circumstance in ordinary conversation with
Jack Wright who exclaimed I shall indite you for the
offence & did so. Jerrolamen became exasperated
at the circumstance – so scrued [screwed] up his courage to give
Wright a chastisement. They met in the street – the Dr,
commenced the parly – the other [illegible] him and
then drew his knife – determined to kill him. Dr.
then attempted to go [illegible] up a [domicil] – When the [illegible]

(one sheet) Stained and torn Thanking (Sands) for his attempts to influence the Indian Department on George Winter's behalf. News of friends (Dr. Jerrolamen), (Logansport residents); Jerrolamen's argument with John Wright (public prosecutor) over some coffee. General Tipton may become Governor. Received a letter from (Pepper?), who has shown his council scene painting to the Indian Department. Requests (Sands) to collect for him signatures or letters of eminent persons while in Washington, for G.W. to sell if he returns to England. Understands (Sands) wants G.W. to paint a head portrait, which he will begin. In blank area: Four-line verse, written in pencil. |
