Logansport Cass Co.
Indiana Jany 7th 1839
Col. A. C. Pepper
Dear Sir:
I addressed you, Rising Sun 17th [illegible] informing you that until that day the painting of the Indian Council had remained unfinished through a
continuance of my indisposition, and that I would c
forward the painting to you as soon as the paint would
become sufficiently hard to warrant the propriety of enclosing
it in a case.
A few days after I wrote to you Mr. D. Pratt informed
me that he had written to you and had addressed you
in Washington, D.C. under these circumstances I concluded
to forward the picture to you and to the care of Genl. Tipton
I advised with Mr. S. S. Tipton upon the propriety of
this measure; and upon his decision in the affirmative
I have taken the liberty of doing so.
The picture has proven a work of longer duration
than I had anticipated but If I have succeeded so
so far as to produce a picture that meets your approbation,
it will prove a source of much gratification to me.
From the diminutive size of the figures there was not
an ample scope to give the likenesses of the actors in the
scene and probably it may not appear to you that I have
given more than a general character of them, though
many have said that you and Col. Sand’s are good
likenesses
