MINUTES OF THE STUDENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE TRUSTEES OF PURDUE UNIVERSITY June 14, 1990 The Student Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees of Purdue University convened in Room 306 of the Purdue Memorial Union Building on the West Lafayette Campus at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, June 14, 1990. Present for all or part of the meeting were Mrs. Ingle, Chairperson; Mr. Stewart, Committee Member; Dr. Beering, President of the University; and University Vice President Grace. The absence of Ms. Haber, Committee Member, was excused. The agenda for the year was established using the surveys provided by Dr. Grace. It was stated that the first six weeks of a new semester are very important to the new student. Retention (especially important as the student pool is decreasing) Promoting a Sense of Community Suggestions for the year 1) First Six Weeks a) Posters "Don't Be A Number" "Take Advantage of Purdue" i.e., great faculty, great programs, great activities b) Student Leader wearing "Joe's diner" type outfit (Freshmen—"Talk to me" or "Ask me quesions") c) Residence Hall programs, communications, reaching shy students 2) Suggestions to faculty a) Push to reach shy ones first six weeks b) Push faculty advising and faculty relationships 3) Seminar to Committee (and Board???) on adjustments being made for the growing segment of "unordinary" students on the main campus.
