June 12, 1971 587 EXECUTIVE SESSION OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE TRUSTEES OF PURDUE UNIVERSITY Purdue Memorial Union June 12, 1971 A. RO.LL CALL. President Knoy convened the Board of Trustees of The Trustees of Purdue University in Executive Session in the Lafayette Room, Purdue Memorial Union,, immediately following luncheon and the presentations by General Underwood, Dean Butz and Dr. Buchanan (LXIII, General Session). All members of the Board were present as follows: itvlrs. Myers, Messrs. Brumfield, Graham, Heine, Hillenbrand, Knoy, Rumely, Walb and Wilson. Also present were President Hovde, Vice President and Treasurer Freehafer, University Vice Presidents Andrews. Hawkins and Mallett, Counsel Schilling, Dr. Hicks, Dean Stone, Messrs. Ford, Hentschel, Fox, Muller, Schaller, Wade and Casteel, Assistant Morris and Secretary Skinner. B. REPORT RE LEGAL ACTION FILED BY PROFESSOR M. SVONAVEC, P. U. CALUMET CAMPUS. Counsel Schilling reported that Professor M. Svonavec, Assistant Professor of Physics, P. U. Calumet Campus, had asked to be reinstated in two particular teaching assignments from which he had been released, and had requested consideration of promotion and salary increase. Professor Svonavec's attorney was told his client would be given the same consideration as that given to all other members of the staff regard¬ ing promotion and sala.ry matters. Subsequently, Professor Svonavec filed legal "action against the Trustees of Purdue University (in their corporate capacity). Dean and Director Elliott, Dr. Yates, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs (Calumet), and the Head of his Department, asking the Court to declare his rights. Mr. Schilling said that the relief Professor Svonavec seeks is hard to determine at this time. Mr. Schilling reported further that appearance has been made for the Trustees, and he has retained the services of a Hammond, Indiana, attorney. The Dean and Director, Academic Dean and Department Head have been advised that they may employ their own counsel or the insurance carrier, or be defended by University Counsel. President Hovde explained procedures in the case of an assistant professor who has not attained tenure. He felt that there will be an increasing number of similar lawsuits as this is an important problem
