[At La Fayette] Pursuant to a call of President Ratliff the Trustees met on this day at La Fayette, at the office of Secretary John A. Stein. There were present President Ratliff and Trustees Edgerton, Peddle, Ragan and Williams. Mr. Samuel Hargrove, recently appointed successor to Hon. Jacob Mutz, who had resigned in consequence of his election to the House of Representatives, was also present, and presented his Commission, and also his official oath—which latter reads as follows, viz: “The State of Indiana, Tippecanoe County, s.s. [sub-state]—I, Samuel Hargrove do hereby solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Indiana, and will faithfully discharge my duties as Trustee of Purdue University. (signed) Samuel Hargrove. Subscribed and sworn to on this 19th of March 1883, before me, John A. Stein, Notary public.” [drawing of seal]So Mr. Hargrove assumed his seat as one of the Trustees of Purdue University. The minutes of the previous 2 meetings of the Trustees were read and approved. President Ratliff then laid before the Board the written resignation of President E.E. White—the same reading as follows: “Purdue University. President’s Room. February 20, 1883. Hon. Joseph C. Ratliff, President of the Board of Trustees. My dear Sir, I hereby tender to the Board of Trustees the resignation of my position as President of Purdue University—the same to take effect at the earliest day at which I can be relieved of my duties, not later than the close of the present college year.
