Conrad Baker Governor & President of the Board on the 30th day of August 1871 at the room of the First National Bank in Lafayette. Present Hon. Conrad Baker, John Purdue, John R. Coffroth, J.D.G. Nelson, John Sutherland, L.A. Burke and M.L. Peirce. A quorum being present, on motion M.L. Peirce was appointed Secretary pro tem, and the minutes of the last three meetings were read, approved and ordered signed. On motion of Mr. Coffroth the plan for the University building marked D adopted April 4, 1871 be laid and the order adopting said plan be rescinded. The Secretary laid before the Board a communication for W.H. Brown, which was read and ordered filed with the papers, and thereupon on motion of J.R. Coffroth it was ordered that the Secretary pro tem be and he is hereby instructed to reply to Mr. Brown’s letter informing him that the Board denies the assumption contained therein of his employment as the architect of the Building or buildings of Purdue University. On motion resolved that M.L. Peirce be authorized & directed to settle with any person having claims against the Board of Trustees for plans of Buildings. On motion of Gov. Baker, Resolved, that the Building committee and Hon. John Purdue and the architect James K. Wilson be and they are herby authorized and empowered to devise and adopt a plan for the first Building of the Purdue University, not less than one hundred and thirty five feet in length, and fifty four feet in width, external measure, three stories high, to conform in the main to the ground plan furnished by said Wilson, provided the said plan is devised and adopted with the concurrence of the said John Purdue within fifteen days from this date, and upon the devising and adopting of the said plan, with the proper specifications, the said architect shall make estimates of the price or value of the work and materials necessary to build and construct the foundation of the said building, and upon such estimate being made the said Building committe [committee] shall let the Building of said foundation to the said Purdue at and for such estimated price or value provided he will obligate himself to do the same on or before the fifteenth day of November 1871, and if he will not so
