Baker the Board of Trustees met this day at 2 o’clock P.M. in the State Senate Chamber at Indianapolis; Present: Messrs. [Messieurs] Nelson, Sutherland, Burke, Peirce, Coffroth and Stein. Mr. Nelson, on motion, was elected President pro tem. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Mr. Coffroth laid before the Board a communication from Hon. John Purdue which on his motion was ordered to [be] filed and spread upon the minutes. The same reads as follows: “Lafayette Ind. Nov. 11, 1872, To the Hon. The Board of Trustees of the Purdue University, Gentlemen: I very much regret that my health will not permit me to be present at your meeting to-morrow; and, desiring above all things else, the success of the University I respectfully beg leave to make the following suggestions: 1. I would very much deprecate and regret the enactment by the Legislature of what I am informed is a proposed measure to place the Purdue University in connection with some of the other educational institutions of the State under one Board of Regents; or in any manner taking from her own individual Board the control of her interests. 2. I respectfully submit that the law regulating the Purdue University, and all laws of a similar character hereafter to be enacted, should be so shaped as to allow any person, corporation or municipality giving aid to any institutions of learning in any form control of such institution in proportion to the aid given. 3. Being informed that there is a purpose on the part of some persons to ask the Board to appoint additional Professors for the University, I respectfully suggest that it would not only be a manifest and profligate waste of the public money, but also an act of useless folly. In no event does the University need any Professors until it is ready to be put into active operation. 4. I am strongly impressed with the fact that we
