PURDUE _, , veterinary medicQl WM VOLUME 2, NUMBER 1 WINTER-SPRING 1976 IN MEMORIAM Dr. John Flower Bullard (COR '22), 76, died February 15, 1976. Dr. Bullard, Professor Emeritus of Veterinary Surgery, retired in 1968 after 39 years of service to the University. He joined the faculty in 1929 after brief periods of practice in his native New York and in Kentucky, and of associations with Kansas State University where he received a Master of Science degree in 1926, and the University of Kentucky. JOHN F. BULLARD 1899-1976 At Purdue, he advanced to the rank of Professor, was the first Head of the Department of Veterinary Clinics, and later became Assistant Dean. For many years, he gave outstanding attention to the health of the University's cattle, swine, and sheep populations, taught courses in animal diseases, and counseled many students interested in veterinary medicine. He organized the clinics into a teaching department in the new School of Veterinary Science and Medicine. Becoming Assistant Dean in 1961, he served in this capacity until his retirement. Dr. Bullard's instructional and research fields were large animal medicine and surgery. He was a co-author of two veterinary medical textbooks and author of over fifty case reports, research reports, and bulletins. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bullard Memorial Veterinary Medical Library Fund and sent to Dr. J.J. Stockton, Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine. OUTSTANDING TEACHERS CITED Inspirational and motivational are two qualities frequently mentioned by students when identifying the characteristics of a good teacher. Being what we are and where we are, all of us in the University should be expected to possess these and other traits which help and cause others to want to learn. Purdue's veterinary medical faculty takes pride in its curriculum and the attention given to sound instruction. Students respond and this year helped to identify four for special recognition: Dr. E.H. Page was this school's nominee for one of three Standard Oil Outstanding Teacher Awards in the University. In the all- University competition he emerged as one of the three to receive University recognition and was so honored by President Hansen at the Spring Semester Faculty Convocation on 29 April. W^T h, Page Knecht Berkhoff Van Vleet Dr. CD. Knecht was the recipient of an Alumni Distinguished Teacher Award made possible by contributions to the University Development Fund, and was cited as the Outstanding Clinician by the Class of 1976. The former award was made at the Spring Semester Faculty Convocation and the latter at the Honors and Awards Program. Dr. C.A. Berkhoff received the Norden Outstanding Teacher Award for 1975-76 and was cited for this distinction at the Honors and Awards Program. Dr. J.E. Van Vleet was acclaimed as the Outstanding Instructor by the Class of 1976 and received public recognition at the School's Honors and Awards Program. Dr. Stockton
