New Awards Spotlight Faculty Accomplishments The School of Veterinary Medicine established four new awards to honor faculty who have demonstrated excellence in their work at Purdue over a period of a decade or more. Two were presented during the 2006 Honors and Awards banquet this spring. The SVM Research Excellence Award was given to Dr. Larry Glickman, professor of epidemiology. The award was created to recognize faculty with an exceptional track-record in sustaining an extramurally funded research program with a high impact nationally and internationally that resulted in increased visibility and honor for the School. Dr. Glickman received national attention for his research on a national surveillance network that uses the medical records of companion animals to help prepare for a wide variety of emerging disease threats to humans and animals. The SVM Excellence in Teaching Award was presented to Dr. Evelyn Kazacos, associate professorof veterinary pathology. The award was created to honor faculty in the School with consistent dedication and commitment to excellence in teaching and education that has had impact on students and faculty. The teaching may involve veterinary students, veterinaiy technology students, medical students, undergraduate and graduate students, or interns and residents. To be eligible, the faculty member must have been teaching in the School for a period of at least ten years. Both awards will be given in even-numbered years. Next year, nominations will be considered for the other two new awards, which will be given on odd-numbered vears. The Career Teaching Award and the Career Award for Research Excellence will honor faculty with a 20 year track- record of teaching or research success at the Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine. New Award Honors Support Staff A new annual award given for the first time in 2006 recognizes the very important roles that technicians, research associates and other research staff play in the growth of the School's research programs. At a special ceremony this spring, Patty Bonney, senior oncology technologist received the inaugural SVM Outstanding Research Staff Award. The award honors research staff members for performance above and beyond the call of duty that makes them indispensable in their units or laboratories. To be eligible, the nominee must have worked continuously for at least three years in a unit of the School. Ruth Brown, secretary in the Student Services office, and Amalia de Gortari, senior oncology technologist, received the annual SVM Outstanding Staff Awards.
