Spring irdue University Veterinary Medical REPORT Dr. Alan Rebar Leads Purdue's Discovery Park Purdue University officially named former School of Veterinary Medicine Dean Alan H. Rebar (PU "73) as the new leader of Discovery Park in January, following a national search. Discovery Park is the University's hub for interdisciplinary research and entrepreneurship. Dr. Rebar had served as interim executive director since July 20, 2005, when he relinquished his post as veterinary school dean. As part of his new duties. Dr. Rebar also tills the position of senior associate vice president for research, and reports to Dr. Charles O. Rutledge. Purdue's vice president of research, who served as executive director of Discovery Park during its four-year building and start-up phase. "Alan's insight and leadership clearly make him the best person to lead this revolutionary, innovative center that is redefining the relationship among research, education and economic development." said Dr. Rutledge. "From his experience as a dean and professor. Alan knows Purdue's administrative structure, faculty and research effort. His leadership, knowledge and judgment will be invaluable in this period when we're bringing facilities online and moving our interdisciplinary research projects into the new facilities." Dr. Rutledge added. A committee was formed to conduct the search for Dr. Rebar's permanent successor in the School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Elikplimi K. Rebar and Max professor of physiology in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, is serving as interim dean. Dr. Asem joined the veterinary school faculty in 1989 and has served as the School's associate dean for research since 1997. He earned his doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Szent Istvan University School of Veterinary Sciences in Budapest. Hungary, in 1980 and received his Ph.D. degree in medical physiology in 1985 from the St. Louis University School of Medicine. He has published 80 articles in peer-reviewed academic journals. Dr. Rebar says his appointment as executive director of Discovery Park comes at a crucial time in the history of Purdue. "We're reinventing the land- grant university concept for the 21st Century. I want to highlight the exciting developments that have occurred in the past decade as a result of the superior efforts of the faculty, staff and students, and the generous support of the School's alumni and friends.
