Mime HO-33 February, 1953 Purdue University-Agricultural Extension Service OUTLINE OF THE COUNTY LANDSCAPE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT R. B. Hull and H. W. Gilbert The Problem: There is great need in every Indiana county for an educational program to further the planning viewpoint and establish the fundamentals of land use planning in the better development of the farmstead, small home grounds, school grounds, rural church grounds, community parks, and other civic enterprises. There is need for educational meetings in landscape development to serve 4-H club leaders, home economics leaders, vocational agricultural teachers, and others exercising leadership in bettering the conditions of homes and communities. The Nature of the Project: The project is planned to encourage families to find the solution of their planning problems by teaching the underlying principles of landscape development, increasing knowledge and appreciation of ornamental plant materials and their proper planting and maintenance, and by providing for and encouraging the study of literature in this field. The county program is planned to be completed in two years but additional meetings may be necessary in subsequent years as developments bring new demands. The public should be informed that all subject matter meetings are open meetings. Special emphasis will be directed toward rural landscape problems. The project will be offered only in those counties in which the County Agent and Home Demonstration Agent will direct it as a joint project. Ideally, the project would be initiated by the county extension program planning committee. The subject-matter meetings conducted by the specialists will be general interest meetings but will be suitable for leader-training leaders and their husbands for acquiring material to be presented to local groups. These meetings will be in lecture form. Colored slides, illustrative materials, models, and printed and mimeographed materials will be used. Every family or group with a landscape problem will be encouraged to make a scale map of the area to be developed. By the end of the project they should be able to complete a plan of their grounds. It will be necessary, therefore, for Cooperative Extension Work in Agriculture and Home Economics State of Indiana, Purdue University and U. S. Department of Agriculture Cooperating H. J. Reed, Director, Lafayette, Indiana Issued in furtherance of the Acts of Kay 8 and June 30, 1914.
