Publication E-43 February 1970 Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service Department of Entomology TOBACCO INSECT CONTROL All of the insecticides listed in this publication are approved for use on tobacco. Read and follow all directions on the container label regarding safety precautions, storage, and container disposal. CONTROL IN PLANT BEDS PREPLANTING SOIL TREATMENTS To control Insecticide and Formulation Use per 100 square yards Application Methods and Precautions Flea Beetles disulfoton (Di-Syston) 15% G 2/3 lb. Apply evenly over bed area before seeding and work into the top two inches of soil. This material is highly poisonous to man if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. Tight bed frames and covers exclude beetles. Green June Beetle Grubs Methyl Bromide 9 lb. Control of grubs is an added benefit when using methyl bromide for weed control. CONTROL IN PLANT BEDS - ON PLANTS AFTER EMERGENCE Green June Beetle Grubs trichlorfon (Dylox) 50% WP Parathion 1% D 1 lb. in 100 gal. water 2 lbs. Apply Dylox or parathion when uprooted seedlings are first observed. Only sections of a bed may require treatment. Follow all label precautions. Flea Beetles carbaryl (Sevin) 50% WP 12 Tbsp. The pre-planting application of Di-Syston should protect emerging seedlings since this is a systemic insecticide. DO NOT USE CARBARYL FORMULATIONS BEFORE THE 7-LEAF STAGE SINCE PLANT INJURY MAY RESULT. Lift off or roll back cover of bed before applying insecticides. Use at least three gallons of water per bed when preparing spray mixtures -- apply material thoroughly but lightly to plants. If Di-Syston was not used before seeding, it could be applied after plants emerge. Broadcast granules over the plants and water thoroughly to wash granules into the soil. Follow all label precautions. carbaryl (Sevin) 80% S 9 Tbsp. carbaryl (Sevin) 4 lb./gal. F 4 Tbsp. carbaryl (Sevin) 10% D 3/4 lb. carbaryl (Sevin) 5% D 1 1/2 lb. disulfoton (Di-Syston) 15% G 2/3 lb. Cutworms trichlorfon (Dylox) 4% Bait 10 to 12 lb. Use commercial preparation, or mix your own. To prepare, mix thoroughly 1/2 lb. of Dylox 80% SP with 10 pounds of corn meal. Broadcast bait in and around the plant bed. Wear rubber gloves when mixing and change clothing and bathe after handling this material. Slugs Metaldehyde Bait 3.2% or Parathion 1% D 2 lb. 2 lb. Spread bait on ground (not on plants) in the evening. Apply dust evenly over plants and soil. WP = Wettable Powder. EC = Emulsifiable Concentrate. Cup = Measuring cup. Tbsp. = Tablespoonful. G = Granules. D = Dust. S = Sprayable. F = Flowable.
