Notes on Forestry and Wood-Use Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service West Lafayette, Indiana 47907 F-23-21 August 1976 PRICE REPORT ON INDIANA FOREST PRODUCTS* William L. Hoover, Extension Forest Economist, Department of Forestry and Natural Resources; and Earl L. Park, Chief Agricultural Statistician, Statistical Reporting Service The prices given in this report were obtained from, a mail survey of Indiana’s primary wood-using industries. These include sawmills, veneer mills, handle plants and others. Quotations were asked for the average prices paid for timber products during April 1976. Since prices change with market conditions, these prices are indicative of timber values as of April 1976. Prices were reported by species and log grades. Tables 1, 2 and 3 compare the 1975 and 1976 prices. Prices are reported on a state wide basis. The statistical significance of these prices is not known. Applicability of Price Data The log prices reported are for logs delivered to a mill. As such they are not applicable to standing timber (stumpage). Prices paid for standing timber (stumpage price) are highly variable. Stumpage price is determined by the size, quality and quantity of timber offered; harvesting costs; transportation costs and the value of the products which can be produced from the timber. Prices are given on the basis of dollars per 1000 board feet. The board foot volume of individual logs is determined by measuring the log's length in feet and its diameter in inches at the small end. The board foot volume is read from a table based on the Doyle Log Rule. Individuals with timber to sell are encouraged to seek the assistance of a professional forester.
