Purdue University Mimeo AH-122 a (Final) Agricultural Experiment Station November 10, 1953 Lafayette, Indiana CHOPPED FORAGE VS. PASTURE FOR FEEDING CATTLE W. M. Beeson and T. W. Perry Department of Animal Husbandry Harvesting green forage as a feed for livestock has been practiced in a limited manner for many years, especially in the British Isles. Only recently has there been much interest among livestock feeders in chopping green forage daily for beef cattle. Since most of the research to date has been conducted on irrigated land, it was deemed advisable to secure some data under midwestern conditions. This experiment was designed with the following objectives: (l) Can more beef be produced from chopped forage or pasture? (2) Will Supplement G assist in correcting the deficiencies in chopped forage? (3) Can cattle be fattened on limited amount of corn (7.5 lb.) Supplement G, and chopped pasture? Experimental Experiment I - Chopped Forage Four lots of 24 steers each were fed from May 12 to September 2 (113 jays) on the following rations: Lot I - Chopped forage, bonemeal, and salt. Lot II - Chopped forage, 1.25 pound Supplement G per steer daily, bonemeal, and salt. Lot III - Chopped forage, 7•5 pound corn, 1.25 pound Supplement G,bonemeal, and salt. Lot IV - Pasture, bonemeal, and salt (16 acres pasture for 24 steers-rotation grazing). Green forage was chopped twice daily directly from the field and fed according to the appetite of the steers. All the cattle had free access to mineral mixture of two parts of bonemeal and one part of salt. Experiment II - Chopped Green Corn On September 2 (due to dry pasture conditions) the steers were taken off topped forage and changed to the following experimental rations: Lot I - Green chopped corn/3»5 lb. Supplement A and minerals. Lot II - Green chopped corn/3«>5 lb. Supplement A, aureomycin (75 mg/steer), and minerals. Lot III - Green chopped corn /8.0 lb. corn, 2«01b. Supplement A, and minerals. Lot IV - Pasture /10.0 lb. corn-and-cob meal, 2.0 lb. Supplement A, and minerals.
