Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service West Lafayette, Indiana SHEEP PRODUCTION CALENDAR FOR FALL LAMBS Breeding Dates -- May 1 to June 6 Lambing Dates -- September 23 to October 29 Early Wean Lambs by December 15 Wean All Lambs By February 1 Market All Lambs By March 1 APRIL 1. Shear and fertility test rams the first week. 2. Drench all sheep the first week. 3. Shear all ewes. 4. Check and trim feet of all sheep. 5. Paint brand number on all ewes. 6. Flush ewes starting April 15. 7. Give rams additional grain from April 15. 8. Provide fresh water and good salt-mineral mixture. 9. Apply spring fertilizer to pastures and hay fields. 10. Weigh and complete form ISPTP-1 210-Day Records, for replacement and sale ewes and rams between 200 and 220 days of age. MAY 1. Turn rams with ewes on May 1. 2. Stop flushing ewes on May 10. 3. Continue giving rams additional grain. 4. Use ram marking harness or marking paint. 5. Use night and day rotation of rams. 6. Change ram marking color on May 17. 7. Keep records of ewe breeding dates. 8. Observe ewes for repeat breeders. 9. Provide fresh water and good salt-mineral mixture. 10. Cut quality hay for fall-winter feeding -- square bales for storage, round bales for field utilization. 11. Make light application of fertilizer following cutting. 12. Weigh and complete form ISPTP-1, 210-Day Records, for all replacement and sale ewes and rams between 200 and 220 days of age. JUNE 1. Remove rams on June 6. 2. Stop giving rams additional grain. 3. Place ewes on good pasture about August 15. 3. Start feeding ewes 1/4 to 1/2 pound shelled corn per day on August 15, if needed. 4.
