AS-350 COOPERATIVE EXTENSION SERVICE PURDUE UNIVERSITY, WEST LAFAYETTE INDIANA 47907 Balanced Swine Rations - 1975-76 Recommendations J. R. Foster, V. B. Mayrose, T. R. Cline, H. W. Jones, M. P. Plumlee, D. M. Forsyth and W. H. Blake, Animal Sciences Department The rations in Tables 1-7 of this publication have been formulated with the aid of the computer. Rather than balancing the rations to meet certain levels of protein, those presented here are formulated to meet the critical amino acid levels. Amino acids considered were lysine, tryptophan and the sulfur-containing ones, methionine and cystine. Average nutrient analyses of ingredients, listed in Table 11, were used in formulating the rations. Use actual analyses of ingredients, if available. The nutrient requirements of swine are listed in Table 12. In the rations containing 10 to 20 percent wheat bran or wheat midds, the phosphorus requirement was increased slightly to insure adequate amounts of the more available inorganic forms of phosphorus. VITAMIN & TRACE MINERAL PREMIXES Levels of vitamins and trace minerals in the rations are based on the composition of premixes given in Table 10. Be sure to check composition of the premixes you use and adjust the amount in the rations accordingly. For example, you may be using a vitamin premix that contains half the level of vitamins as the Purdue premix. In that case, double the level in the ration or feed according to the supplier's recommendation. SOYBEAN MEAL -- 44% or 49% Rations in this publication contain 44% soybean meal. If 49% soybean meal is used, substitute at 88% of the level of 44% soybean meal in any ration. For example, if a ton of ration contains 300 pounds of 44% soybean meal, the same protein level in the ration may be attained by substituting 264 pounds of 49% soybean meal (300 x . 88) for the 300 pounds of 44% soybean meal. Then add 36 pounds of corn (300-264) to the amount of corn in a ton of the ration. FEED ADDITIVES Antibiotics and other feed additives have not been included in the rations since the need for these will vary between farms. In general, drugs are not needed in the gestation ration except perhaps just prior to farrowing. The greatest benefits from appropriate additives will usually be in the starter and grower rations. If you use feed additives, be sure to follow guidelines for additions and any withdrawal regulations listed on the label. MINERALS Do not add extra minerals to any of the rations or supplement formulas. However, a free-choice mineral mix may be supplied. animal sciences swine
