Prepared by J. R. Foster, V. B. Mayrose, T. R. Cline, J. H. Conrad, H.W. Jones and M. P. Plumlee, Department of Animal Sciences Department of Animal Sciences SOWS AND GILTS DURING THE GESTATION PERIOD 1. In confinement, hand-feed 4 pounds of a complete ration (Table 1) per sow per day during the summer months, and 4 to 5 pounds during the winter months. Or hand-feed 3 to 4 pounds of corn or equivalent and 3/4 pound of protein supplement (Table 6) per head per day. 2. Individual feeding of sows or gilts in stalls once a day is recommended. However, sows may be fed in a group and limit-fed, but be sure a large enough feeding area is available for each animal. Good results have also been observed when sows have access to a self-feeder 8 to 12 hours out of each 72-hour period. 3. For sows and gilts on quality alfalfa or ladino pasture, feed about 2 pounds of corn per sow per day and provide a free-choice mineral mixture. During the last month of the gestation period, feed approximately 1/2 pound of protein supplement per sow per day. 4. For sows and gilts on silage, feed 6 to 10 pounds of good quality corn silage, 1 to 1.5 pounds of a protein supplement and provide a free-choice mineral mixture. Additional energy may be needed during the last month of gestation. 5. In general, antibiotics need not be added to the gestation rations. FARROWING AND LACTATION 1. Any sow ration in Table 1 may be fed during lactation. Additional bulk, such as wheat bran or oats, may replace 200 to 400 pounds of corn in the farrowing ration. 2. Levels of antibiotics or other feed additives will depend on the level of disease present and the additive used. PROTEIN SUPPLEMENTS FOR GROWING-FINISHING SWINE The protein supplements in Table 6 can be mixed with ground corn to make complete rations. Supplement 1 or 2 should be used from 40 to 125 pounds. Supplement 3 or 4 may be used from 125 pounds to market. For free-choice feeding with shelled corn to pigs between 75 pounds and market weight, Modified Purdue Supplement 2 is recommended (No. 5 or 6 in Table 6). MINERALS 1. Do not add additional minerals to any of the suggested balanced swine ration formulas, complete rations or supplements; however, a free-choice mineral mix may be supplied. 2. A suggested free-choice mineral mix consists of: 2 parts calcium carbonate, 2 parts dicalcium phosphate, plus 1 part trace mineralized salt.
