PURDUE UNIVERSITY AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION Lafayette, Indiana Mimeo. No. 4 Dept, of Animal Husbandry September 18, 1942 DOES IT PAY TO USE THE PURDUE PIG RATION FOR FATTENING HOGS? For the past fifteen years or more, a pig ration composed of 70 pounds of ground corn, 20 pounds of wheat middlings, ground wheat, or ground oats, and 10 pounds of tankage or other protein-rich supplement has been fed extensively on Indiana farms. This ration is recommended by Purdue for sows and litters during the suckling period. A similar ration is recommended for weaned pigs until they weigh at least 75 pounds. More recently, many farmers have continued with a ration of this type through the fattening period because of the good gains produced on their hogs. This situation * raises the question as to the economy of using the pig ration for fattening hogs. It seems likely that it is not the most economical procedure under the usual feeding conditions on Indiana farms. Four feeding tests were made at this station during 1941 and 1942 to help answer this question. The pig ration of corn, wheat and supplement was compared, both in dry. lot and on alfalfa pasture, with the most efficient fattening rations developed at Purdue. The lots and ,rations were as follows: The Fattening Ration Lot 1. Shelled corn, Supplement 5 or Supplement C*, and mineral mixture self-fed, free-choice. The Pig Ration Lot 2. Coarse-ground corn 70 pounds, coarse-ground wheat 20 pounds, and Supplement 5 ten pounds, mixed and fed in self-feeder separate from the mineral mixture. The feeding results are shown on the following pages. *Supplement 5 for dry lot - Supplement C for pasture. Formulas for these supplements are shown on page 4. 9/42/927
