Purdue University Mimeo AE-55 Agricultural Extension Service Revised September, 1160 Lafayette, Indiana REPORT OF 1959 DRAIN TILE SALES Donald R. Sisson, Extension Agricultural Engineer Twenty-five drain tile manufacturers reported sales of nearly 40 million lineal feet of drain tile in Indiana during 1959. Table 1 shows the 1959 drain tile sa.les as reported by 10 cL^r and 15 concrete drain tile manufacturers. In addition to these 25 plants, there were eight or ten others in operation that produced mostly minor quantities—probably enough, however, to bring the total sales to more than 40 million lineal feet. This summary does not include drain tile shipped into Indiana by out-of-state manufacturers. However, some of the tile listed by Indiana manufacturers may have been sold in other states. Table 1. 1958 Clay and Concrete Drain Tile Sales by Sizes Diameter (inches) Ten Clay Manufacturers (lineal feet) Fifteen Concrete Manufacturers (lineal feet) Total 25 Manufacturers (lineal feet) Four 17,948,057 650,411 18,598,468 Five 6,798,306 2,652,453 9,450,759 Six 4,573,190 2,664,105 7,237,295 Eight* 1,117,932 661,876 1,779,808 Ten 347,932 245,967 593,899 Twelve and up 548,303 120,568 668,871 Total, all sizes 31,333,720 6,995,380 38,329,100 * Includes some seven inch tile. Little Change Compared to 1958 Table 2 shows a comparison of drain tile sales during the years 1957, 1958 and V59. Both clay and concrete drain tile sales greatly increased from 1957 to 1958, resulting in an overall increase of 21 percent. However, clay tile sales showed practically no change from 1958 to 1959, and concrete tile showed an increase of 4.7 percent. The result was an overall increase of only 0.8 percent. Clay drain tile has accounted for more than 80 percent of the drain tile sales °r each of these three years. However, there is a slight trend showing that con-^•rote tile manufacturers are increasing their proportion of total sales. Concrete lie accounted for 15.8, 17.5 and 18.2 percent of total sales for the years 1957, , and 1959, respectively.
