Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service Lafayette, Indiana Mimeo 4-H-259 March 1963 4-H/FFA PICKLE CLUB PROJECT (Fulton - LaPorte - Marshall - St. Joseph Counties) Prepared by the 4-H/FFA and Horticulture Departments of Purdue University. Purpose; To bring interest in the grow- ing of high quality pickles for commer- cial purposes through a 4-H and FFA pickle project. The 1963 project will be offered to 4-H boys and girls and FFA boys in Fulton, LaPorte, Marshall and St. Joseph Counties. Cooperators: The H. J. Heinz Co., the Purdue 4-H and Horticulture Departments, and the Extension agents and vocational agriculture teachers in Fulton, LaPorte, Marshall and St. Joseph Counties. Responsibilities; The 4-H/FFA Project will be carried on through the regular 4-H Club and FFA Departments of Purdue University, the county Extension agents, vocational agriculture teachers and the H. J. Heinz Co. The pickles will be delivered to the re- ceiving stations at Walkerton, Plymouth or Argos. Awards: The four highest scoring boys or girls will receive IJVGA trips (bus fare and hotel) to the National Junior Vegetable Growers Convention at Pitts- burgh, Penn., December 8-13, 1963. These will be given to the highest scoring boys or girls in the area. The four state winners will be selected by the 4-H Club and FFA Departments coop- erating with the Department of Horticulture, Purdue University. The state winners must be at least 14 years of age in 1963. Rules 1. Members of this club will follow the pickle growing practices as outlined by the pickle companies and the Cooperative Extension Service of Purdue University. 2. A club member must grow at least one- half acre of pickles and must sign a con- tract as a grower with the H. J. Heinz Co. This acreage must be in a separate plot or if part of a larger field and not separated, the average yield or gross re- turns per acre of the whole field will be that reported for the club acreage yield. 3. The county Extension agents or their representatives shall select the champion, reserve champion, and third highest scor- ing contestant in each of the four coun- ties. The gross income, or yield per acre, will count 80% and the members 4-H achievement records will count 20% of the score. 4. Regular Purdue 4-H crop club records will be kept. 5. The county Extension agent will send his three high pickle club records to Roscoe Fraser, 4-H Club Department, Purdue University by October 1.
