Mimeo 4H-141 SUGGESTIONS TO JUDGES OF 4-H ELECTRIC PROJECT EXHIBITS Prepared by 4-H Club and Agricultural Engineering Departments In order that the judging of county 4-H Electric Project exhibits may be more uniform throughout the State, the following suggestions are prepared for judges and those in charge of the exhibits. 1. The "group” method of judging should be used. According to this plan all exhibits in a class should be thoroughly studied and evaluated by the judge. They may then be grouped in blue, red, white, and green ribbon groups according to the score that they receive on score card for 4-H electric exhibits. The persons in charge of the exhibit may indicate about what percent of the exhibits they would like to have in each group. This should be as flexible as possible to allow the judge to set the standard for each group. You may give some blue, red, and white ribbons in each county show, regardless of how such exhibits might place in different competitions. After the exhibits are grouped, the judge should select an exhibit in each class to represent the county at the State Fair. 2. Attached are copies of the official judging score sheets with a few comments which may be of assistance to the judge in using them. 3. It is advisable to have two or perhaps three judges depending upon the number of exhibits. Both men and women should be on the judging committee. In case there are many exhibits, each judge may work separately, and then check each other’s work for agreement before the ribbons are "tied". 4. County achievement winners should not be determined solely upon the exhibit. The achievement winners should be selected by the County Awards Committee. A maximum of 20 points out of 100 should be given for the exhibit record in determining county achievement winners. 5. If it can be avoided, no one should judge exhibits in his own working area. 6. Insofar as possible, it is important to keep personal likes and dislikes from influencing decisions,— i.e., certain colors, certain plugs, certain shapes and certain dimensions. In other words there must be sound scientific reasoning for favoring or discriminating against any exhibit or part of the exhibit. 7. If time will permit, it is good to check all points on the score card tag and leave it with the exhibit.
