Agricultural Extension Service Purdue University Lafayette, Indiana Mimeo 4-H -- 177 Revised, 1962 THE ADVANCED INDIANA 4-H — FFA CANNING TOMATO CLUB PROGRAM Prepared by the 4-H, FFA and Horticulture Departments of Purdue University PURPOSE - To further increase interest in the growing of high quality tomatoes for canning purposes through the 4-H — FFA Tomato Club Program for Indiana boys who are at least 14 and not over 20 years of age sometime during the year. This project will supplement the 4-H — FFA Canning Tomato Clubs now in operation. CO-OPERATORS - Canners and Fieldmen, Purdue University 4-H Club, FFA and Horticultural Departments, state and county agricultural extension agencies, the Vocational Agricultural Division of the State Board of Education and the Indiana Canners Association. AWARDS - The five Advanced Indiana 4-H Canning Tomato Club boys with high records, preferably from five different factories or loading stations, will be awarded trips to the National Junior Vegetable Growers Convention, Miami Beach, Florida. December 1 to 9, 1962. These trips, financed by the Indiana Canners Association and Indiana Canners, will pay for the round trip bus transporation from Terre Haute to Miami Beach, Florida, the bus transportation for the educational side trips in Florida and the rooms at the Deauville Hotel, Miami Beach, Florida. The member will pay for his own meals while on the trip and convention registration fees. State winners will be selected by the 4-H Club and FFA Departments co-operating with the Horticultural Department of Purdue University. They will follow the same procedure as outlined for the selection of factory or station winners. In addition the highest scoring canner or fieldman will be awarded a trip to the NJVGA Convention, Miami Beach, Florida, December 1 to 9, 1962. The 4-H Club, FFA and Horticultural Departments will select the highest scoring canner or fieldman for this NJVGA trip. It will be based upon the folbwing activities (1) number of 4-H -- FFA canning tomato club boys enrolled in the project (2) number of l4 year old or older boys completing the project (3) quality-tonnage index (QTI) records of his high boy and the average QTI of his top 5 boys, (4) recognized good tomato growing practices used by the club members as advocated by the canner, fieldman or Purdue Extension Department as shown by the club member’s record books. The Indiana Canners Association will be responsible for collecting all the prize money. The Canner or Fieldman at each factory carrying on 4-H - FFA Tomato Club Work will send the names and addresses of those enrolled to Roscoe Fraser, Purdue Horticulture Department, by June 30. We will need this Information in order for us to send out the NJVGA record forms to the members. RULES - 1. The project will be offered to all Indiana Canning factories and loading stations.
