PURDUE UNIVERSITY Ext Cir. 488 Reprinted from Report, Vol. 3, No. 2 the key to more efficient fertiiiiation SOIL TESTING by Marion Baumgardner, Agronomy Department COUNTY AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION AGENTS will furnish soil sampling materials and help you plan a soil testing program. A CLEAN PAIL and either a sampling tube, auger or spade are needed for taking soil samples. Soil from at least 15 locations should be mixed to form a sample. DIVIDE FIELDS into uniform areas not larger than 10 acres. Each area should have the same color, texture and past crop, fertilizer and lime treatments. SOIL from surface to plow p except in permanent pastures, take ••3 inches. If a spade is used, dig ''taped hole and slice from one side. BREAK CLODS and remove roots or trash from the sample. Air dry the soil on a clean paper; not on a stove or where fertilizer or manure could contaminate it. FIELD RECORD SHEETS are used to identify samples and record crop and fertilizer history.
