PURDUE UNIVERSITY Agricultural Experiment Station Circular No. 76 LaFayette, Ind., January, 1918 INCREASING CROP YIELDS FOR WAR NEEDS A. T. Wiancko The demands of the war make it imperative that immediate steps be taken to increase crop production in this country. Indiana must produce its share of the increase required. Every means at the command of the farmer for increasing crop yields must be utilized to the fullest possible extent. The total acreage in crops can not be greatly increased under the present condition of labor shortage. The principal increase of crops must come by increasing the yields per acre. Better systems of cropping must be employed. Clover and other legumes in the rotation will increase the yields of grain crops from five to 10 bushels per acre. The plant food in manures and crop residues on the farm must be better utilized. At present crop prices, manure will produce crop increases worth from $4.00 to $9.00 per ton of manure applied. The intelligent use of fertilizers offers a ready means of increasing crop yields with a minimum of extra labor. Liming acid soils, especially by improving the conditions for the growth of legumes, will produce crop increases worth from $5.00 to $15.00 per acre. Tile draining wet lands will increase crop returns from $10.00 to $20.00 per acre. Read this circular.
