PURDUE UNIVERSITY Agricultural Experiment Station Circular No. 48 LaFaylttl, Ind., January, 1915 NOTES OF THE HOG-CHOLERA CONFERENCE AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY, DECEMBER 18, 1913 Reported by C. H. Clink The conference was called to order at 10 :oo A. M. by Dr. R. A. Craig. Dr. J. C. Rodgers was nominated for chairman, and elected unanimously. Dr. A. F. Nelson was elected to lead the discussion. Dr. J. C. Rodgers: I thought that when this disturbance was going on that Dr. Nelson was the name. You all know the reasons that brought us here today. Let us all profit by it. I know of nothing of more interest to the veterinarians of Indiana than the prevention and control of hog-cholera. The first thing on the program is an address of welcome by Prof. J. H. Skinner. Prof. J. H. Skinner: An address of welcome is a thing that a good many people try to run away from, but we felt that it was proper for someone to welcome you here. I am pleased to see the veterinarians come here annually. I believe there is an opportunity for us to get together on this most vital and important question. In my ten years of experience in Indiana, I find that the question of feeding, breeding and management goes hand in hand with the question of sanitation. There should be a close relationship between the animal husbandry and the veterinary work. There is as much need for discussion along the lines of breeding, feeding, and sanitation in connection with the subject of hog-cholera as anything else. I do not presume to say to you gentlemen here what should be the plan, but I see a good deal of the work along the lines of hog-cholera prevention on the farms over the State, and on our own farm, and I say that the farmer is not ready to take hold of the proposition as yet. He needs to be shown all of these things. There are several questions to be taken up. We find in our own experience here with our herds and flocks that the veterinarian can do certain things, but he cannot get results without the cooperation of the man who is handling the animals. The veterinarian does not fail in his part, but the man who is handling the animals does not cooperate. Our men here are cooperating with the men at Indianapolis in the Veterinary College. 1 feel that there should be a feeling of good will between this institution on general principles and the
