PURDUE UNIVERSITY Extension Circular 483 Reprinted from Report, Vol. 3, No. 1 Personality Pastures can make money for You by M. R. Teel and Les Smith, Agronomy Department FAR-SIGHTED GRAIN FARMERS plant different maturing varieties of corn, wheat or soybeans to spread risks and labor. Livestock farmers can select grass-legume mixtures with different maturity dates and similarly spread risks. • They can provide the type of management each mixture requires. • They can utilize each mixture at its proper growth stage. • They can select species which meet a definite requirement at specified seasons. These add up to greater profits from forages. The table shows some time-tested mixtures with the appropriate dates, for central Indiana, for grazing or harvesting. The dates will vary somewhat with the season and locality, but serve as an index to the readiness dates. No single mixture can furnish pasture and hay or silage for the full season. A combination of two or more of these mixtures provides needed Cooperative Extension Work in Agriculture and Home Economics, State of Indiana, Purdue University and U. S Department of Agriculture Cooperating, L. E. Hoffman, Director, Lafayette, Indiana. Issued in furtherance of the acts of May 8, and June 30, 1914.
